I am a retired Vancouver family doctor.
After attending the Scottish Parliament several years
ago I began studying different electoral systems. The
politics of extremes has not been serving us very well here in BC.
Also too many people especially younger folk are loosing confidence
in the electoral system and the governments we elect.
MY SUGGESTIONS Please carefully consider a partial
proportional system with a 5% threshold before a party is eligible.
I like the BC Green Party's model of 50% riding elected and 50%
proportional according to a prepublished list by each party. We
need more discussion of issues. Minority governments have worked
well in Canada on the rare occasions when we have had them. That's
how we got Medicare. My dad was on the original Hall commission
that drafted Medicare. Please also study the new
federal elections act. I think it is a giant step ahead and we
should incorporate similar controls in BC to make our
financing structures here more democratic. Wider
ownership of media should also be entrenched as a pillar of
democracy. Thank you for this opportunity to express
my views. I admire what you are doing.
